Course Overview

Under this course, students will be introduced to SPSS and STATA. SPSS is a well-established statistical and data analysis program with a range of facilities for data manipulation and offers many procedures for statistical analysis. STATA, on the other hand, is a command based application, can perform same as SPSS. The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to SPSS and STATA for performing the theoretical statistical analysis in a computer-aided platform. The course includes a basic guide for creating SPSS file and creating, recoding and computing new variables, followed by basic analytical commands to display simple descriptive statistics, frequencies, cross-tabulations, means, t-tests, correlation and regression. The production of simple graphics and dealing with missing values within the data will also be covered.

The course will help students to gain understanding and knowledge in:

·       Data types, variable declaration and data entry

·       Data cleaning, sorting for good database preparation

·       Conducting differential statistics

·       Performing inferential statistics

·       Analyzing multiple responses and missing values

·       Database conversion in different format

·       Data interpretation and support in decision making

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

At the end of the course the students will be able to-

·       Evaluate data types and their relative parameters;

·       Perform statistical analysis with the computer application;

·       Demonstrate large scale database and infer decision from the data and analyses;

·       Perform hypothesis testing for decision making;

·       Construct model with dependent and independent variable.
