Course Overview

For building liveable space and ensuring quality urban life the importance of landscape is paramount in urban land use, planning and development. Landscape planning is a tool for alleviating urban blight and promoting social justice.  It helps to promote economic as well as social well-being of inner city residents. Knowledge on landscapes is vital for environmental assessment of plans and programs.  Whereas urban design is concerned about designing and shaping cities towards an urban renaissance. Good urban design is essential for producing attractive, high-quality, sustainable places in which people will want to live, work and relax. Better designed places inspire and can be cherished places where vibrant communities can grow and prosper. Knowledge on urban design encourages planners and urban designers who influence and shape development decisions to think more deeply and sensitively about the living environment being created.

Course Objectives

The learning objectives of this course are as follows:

·       To provide critical understanding about urban place with regard to landscape, diversity of use, temporal activities and qualities

·       To offer insights into the place making and landscaping criteria

·       To introduce students to the approaches and the concepts that inform intervention at planning and design scale 

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

·       Demonstrate the scope of urban design and landscaping in planning;

·       Appreciate urban design principles and landscape elements in analyzing quality of urban space;

·       Design space following urban design criteria and landscaping elements.
