Course Overview

This course aims to introduce the challenges associated with housing in third world countries having special emphasis on Bangladesh context. It discusses the housing conditions, policies and organization. It introduces different tools and techniques to develop urban housing strategies. It also discusses the salient features of low income housing and possible options for securing the shelter of the urban poor.

Course Objectives

It is expected that upon completion of the course student will learn the following issues:

·       The nature and characteristics of housing

·       Evolution of urban housing strategies

·       Housing situation and policies in Bangladesh

·       Tools and techniques related to urban housing strategies

·       Challenges and approaches for housing the urban poor

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

·       Demonstrate urban housing strategies;

·       Critique different housing approaches;

·       Develop different planning tools in different contexts;

·       Plan and implement urban housing projects.
