URP 3121: Development Policy and Planning

Course Overview

This course provides a critical overview of development theory. Students of this course are expected to learn and understand the basics of development policy and planning. This course has been designed as part of the development planning package of the course curricula.  

Course Objectives

It is expected that upon completion of the course student will learn the following issues:

·       Basics of development economics

·       Ideas of development from the 19th century forward

·       Various theoretical approaches of development planning

·       Macro-economic development philosophies which articulate planning practices in developing countries

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

At the end of the course the students will be able to-

·       Comprehend the meaning and nature of geography of development;

·       Examine the conventional and non-conventional theories of development;

·       Analyse the impact of different development approaches on housing and urbanization in the Global South;

·       Identify the development philosophies affecting the development planning in Bangladesh.
